Victor Sanchez of Houston pulled off a shocker at Saturday's Border Explosion boxing show at McAllen Convention Center.
Sanchez (3-3-1) defeated previously unbeaten Brownsville super
bantamweight Jerry "Chicanito" Guevara (7-1, five KOs) in the co-main
event of the Golden Boy and Julio Marines presentation was broadcast
live internationally on Telefutura's Solo Boxeo. Sanchez won on a
six-round unanimous decision over the favored Brownsville fighter, who
was coming back after an eight-month layoff from a left ankle and heel
injury.
"This feels great," Sanchez said. "It does a lot for my career because he (Guevara) is a good fighter."
Guervara took control of the fight in the first round. He sent
Sanchez to the canvas during the opening round. Guervara withstood a
solid punch to the face by Sanchez during the third round, and Sanchez
appeared to win the fourth round. It was Guevara whose knees dropped to
the canvas during the fifth and again in the sixth as the Houston
fighter recorded his improbable victory.
In the late scheduled 10-round main event, lightweight and Golden Boy
prospect Carlos Molina of Rosemead, Calif., battled Marcos Leonardo
Jimenez of the Dominican Republic in the main event. Molina took a
16-0-1 record with seven KOs into the bout.
Also later Saturday, Mission bantamweight Isaac Torres went after his
second victory as a pro in a scheduled four-rounder against
Brownsville's Mario Delgado.
Highlighting earlier action on the card, Lyford heavyweight Eric
"Drummer Boy" Molina (19-2, 14 KOs) scored a six-round unanimous
decision victory over Andrew Greely (14-40, eight KOs) of Monroe, La.,
while San Juan welterweight Enrique Alvarez (2-0, two KOs) recorded a
third-round technical knockout victory over Gerardo Alvarado (2-8) of
Veracruz, Mexico.
San Antonio light welterweight James Cantu (9-0, four KOs) stayed
perfect with a six-round unanimous decision over Harlingen's Hector
Garza (3-6, two KOs).
Light welterweight Marc Torres, Isaac Torres' younger brother, made a
successful pro debut with a four-round unanimous decision win over
Eduardo Alvarado (0-1) of Brownsville.
In the evening's opening bout, light welterweight Elio Ruiz (1-1) of
Austin prevailed over Ivan Rios (0-6) of McAllen on a four-round
unanimous decision.
