Shane Mosley's comeback fight will go on with or without Ricardo Mayorga

Shane Mosley will find out in just a matter of days whether his comeback fight against Ricardo Mayorga will move forward as scheduled Aug. 29 or if he will have to face a last-minute replacement instead. The drama stems from an injunction filed by promoter Don King, who claims he has an exclusive contract with Mayorga and can keep him from fighting under Mosley's promotion company. In the midst of a training camp where he will fight for the first time in almost two years, Mosley dropped everything to fly to Miami to appear in court. If the judge rules in King's favor, then he's ready to move forward with a new fight against a different opponent. "The fight's going to go on whether it be with Mayorga or somebody that's just as equal as him," Mosley told FOX Sports. "I'm going to be fighting regardless. Don King or anybody isn't going to stop me from doing my show." The problem Mosley has with the entire proceeding is the motivation. He's not sure why King is insisting on stopping the fight as opposed to taking a cut as Mayorga's promoter, but he believes there's more to the story than what's being told so far. "A lot of times a promoter will sue for their portion of the money. They won't want to stop the fight," Mosley said. "There's a lot of foul play being done even for the thing to go to Miami and fought in Miami as far as the court's concerned, and the documents clearly say it's supposed to be fought in New York in this dispute. Why is it happening? Or it should be in California where the fight's taking place. Why are we going to Miami to talk about this case when it has no jurisdiction? “DON KING'S NOT RELEVANT ANYMORE AND THIS GOES ON. HE HASN'T PROMOTED A MAYORGA FIGHT IN FIVE YEARS SO FOR DON KING TO COME OUT OF THE WOODWORK AND SAY THAT HE PROMOTES HIM IS CRAZY. ” — Shane Mosley "We will find out what the judge says on Monday. Who is this benefitting being in Florida to stop the fight? Don King or is it the other promoters out there like an Al Haymon, that I guess I'm on bad promotion with because of the other fight they have? Who does this benefit? Why do they want the fight to be stopped? There's a lot of questions." The bout with Mayorga was a rematch the 2008 fight in which Mosley won by knockout with one second remaining in the 12th and final round. The fight was competitive up to that point and Mosley was excited to face Mayorga again and settle the score after the outspoken boxer targeted him in a number of comments.
If Mayorga is pulled from the fight in the 11th hour, Mosley says he's already secured another opponent so his pay-per-view card will move forward. Mosley promises it would be a quality opponent for his return to the ring. "I'm going to train, the fight's going to go on, it's not going to be stopped, there's nothing they can do to stop it. I just need to see if the judge is going to allow Ricardo Mayorga to fight or not," Mosley said. "My backup fighter's actually better than Mayorga. We had some run-ins, too, with the backup opponent. So a lot of people will probably be excited about that as well. People will still get the same excitement and charge with this guy." Clearly, Mosley is angered by the late nature of this court case stemming from King's claim. He believes deep down that this is just King trying to stop him from fighting, but even if Mayorga gets pulled, Mosley is moving forward. And then he might be seeing King in court again after the fight on Aug. 29 as well. "Don King's not relevant anymore and this goes on. He hasn't promoted a Mayorga fight in five years so for Don King to come out of the woodwork and say that he promotes him is crazy. (Mayorga) had two fights before this before he fought me without Don King. It's just a tactic to stop my fight. Who benefits from trying to stop my fight? Who's been trying to stop my fight from day one?" Mosley stated. "I'm definitely going to sue Don King afterwards, after all this. I know they are going to try to put a stop to it ... but we'll definitely get back at him after this fight."
